"I had tons of fun at the tournament! I really enjoyed answering questions. I think we did really well!"

The Bowl of Scholars

The Gulf Shores Middle School scholar's bowl team has attended four matches at Spanish Fort Middle School, Fairhope Middle School, Gulf Shores Middle School, and Bay Minette Middle School. At each match they played two rounds. Unfortunately, the team lost both rounds at Fairhope Middle. Nevertheless the team auspiciously won both rounds here at Gulf Shores Middle and also won at both rounds at Bay Minette Middle. At Spanish Fort Middle School, they lost one round and won the other!

The tryouts for the Scholars Bowl team were in the beginning of October in 2008. The practices followed a week later. The team has been practicing every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:05 to 4:00. During the practices Mrs. Donna Jo Webb, the seventh and eighth grade Gifted Education Reading teacher and the Scholars Bowl team coach, has read off practice questions found in Scholars Bowl quiz books.

On Tues., Mar. 3, the Scholars Bowl team went to Faulkner State Community College to participate in the County Tournament against teams such as Daphne Middle School and Central Baldwin Middle School. At the tournament all the teams who participated were split into two groups-the red group and the blue group. The top team from each group was able to participate in the Championship Round to decide first and second places. Gulf Shores competed in four different rounds. They lost the first, however, they came back winning the next three. The most they won by was 200 points. It was against Daphne the score 230 to 30! Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to qualify for the championship round where Foley Middle School took first place and Spanish Fort Middle School took second. However, they were second in their group!

The Captains and Most Valuable Players on the team are Alexis Rodrigue 8th and Alina Meyer 8th. The other students on the team are Sydney Ayers and Nathan Wood in seventh grade and Shelby Dueitt, Maliha Khan, Sydney Taylor, Ross Roberts and Todd Stehr. Ross Roberts said, "I had tons of fun at the tournament! I really enjoyed answering questions. I think we did really well!" Good Job Scholars Bowl!
